Case hardening – which includes carburising and carbonitriding – is one of the most widely used heat treatment processes for automotive components. But why is it so valuable?
Hard Outside, Tough Inside
Case hardening creates components with a hard, wear-resistant surface layer (the “case”) while maintaining a tough, ductile core. This combination of properties is ideal for gears, shafts, cams and other components that must resist surface wear while withstanding impact loads.
Improved Fatigue Life
The compressive residual stresses introduced during case hardening improve fatigue resistance, extending the service life of components subject to cyclic loading.
Process Options
Heat Treat 2000 offers both carburising and carbonitriding using continuous mesh belt furnaces. Our experienced team can advise on the best process for your specific application and material.
